o This course provides students with skills and strategies that will allow them to continue their education successfully and pursue pathways to employment that may involve apprenticeship and/or cooperative education programs. Students will develop greater independence in reading and writing, as well as in interpreting media texts; use a range of media and community resources; and communicate both orally and in writing on a variety of topics. o As you move through this course you will create a literacy portfolio. This is a file containing a record of your reading experiences and samples of your writing, a reading log containing a list of what you have read, and learning reflections journal where you will think about your skills and your goals related to them. o The approximate teaching time per UNIT is indicated in the Course Content. However, how much time you will need to complete the tasks and assignments, or which is dedicated to independent reading and writing, will depend on your own individual needs and literacy competency. Who should take the course? o Students who wish to upgrade their English literacy skills. o Students whose language development was in another language other than English and who may need more instruction on the reading. o Adults interested in acquiring the skills necessary to live and to work in the twenty-first century. Knowing that poor literacy can create unwanted stigmas, students will be able to work independently and privately, in their own homes, either on their own or with the help of an online teacher Level 1 o Conversation Skills Are Developed o Reading and writing are important skills, . The main focus of the program is developing your ability to use English in your everyday personal and workplace situations. o You will receive a student assignment booklet and CD which are designed to help you learn to speak English. All you need to do is follow the directions in your student assignment booklet to understand how and when to use each component of the program. Level 2 o You will learn the Basic English necessary to survive on the job. o Completing simple forms and asking for directions o Identifying places at work o Following simple instructions for using common machines at work o Greeting customers, taking their orders and offering assistance o Understanding good work habits o Working with money, both at work and at home o Following safety rules at work o Reading help wanted ads, and completing a job application Level 3 o Everyday English o You will learn the Basic English necessary to survive in your new life o Introducing yourself and completing Identification form o Reading maps, following directions and using a payphone o Calendars, times and dates, store hour signs, and the weather o The supermarket, reading price tags and expiration dates o Shopping for clothes, comparison shopping, and writing checks o Buying or renting a home, asking for simple repairs o Making doctors’ appointments, listening to doctors’ instructions o Reading help wanted ads, completing job applications o Using public transportation and reading traffic signs Level 4 o Basic Skills in Reading o Your readings include a variety of sources such as popular literature, classical literature, articles, reviews, and workplace-related materials. o Fiction - Includes many different examples from novels and short stories o Nonfiction - biographies, autobiographies, essays, magazine articles, reviews o Poetry and Drama - popular, social, and classical aspects of each are covered o Prose and Visual Information - brochures and ads, calendars and schedules, forms and documents, manuals and handbooks, drawings and diagrams, charts and graphs Level 5 o Basic Skills in Writing o Writing is a form of expression and communication. When you write well, others can understand what you are saying.
